Calculate your VAT return (FTA Form 201)
Quick answerIn MAJA Books click VAT & Corp. Tax in the left menu, set the Period Start and Period End of your tax period, and click Calculate VAT — MAJA fills the FTA Form 201 boxes 1 to 14 from your posted documents and shows the payable or refundable tax.
Before you start
- Your VAT registration must be set in Settings → Organisation. Without it MAJA says there is no VAT return for the period.
Steps
- Click VAT & Corp. Tax in the left menu. The VAT Return tab opens.
- Under VAT Period, set the Period Start and Period End. MAJA starts with the current month — change it to your quarter if you file quarterly.
- Click Calculate VAT (or Recalculate at the top).
- Read VAT on sales and all other outputs (boxes 1–8): - 1a–1g: standard-rated supplies in each emirate, then Box 1 total. - 3: reverse charge — services from abroad. - 4: zero-rated supplies. 5: exempt supplies. - 6: goods imported into the UAE through customs. - 8: totals.
- Read VAT on expenses and all other inputs (boxes 9–11): standard-rated expenses, reverse charge recoverable, totals.
- Read Net VAT due (boxes 12–14): due tax, recoverable tax, and Payable tax for the period or Refundable tax for the period.
What MAJA does for you
- Calculates every box from posted invoices, credit notes, bills, expenses, debit notes and imports in the period, and shows a message with the payable or refundable amount.
- Nets bad-debt relief and its recovery into Box 1 and says so under the box.
- Lists out-of-scope supplies separately: they are deliberately not on the return.
- Shows any input tax paid before registration (Article 56) that is included in the inputs.
Good to know
- Box 2 (tourist refunds) and Box 7 (adjustments to imported goods) carry an Enter button on the return: type the amount and the VAT with a reason, and MAJA posts the adjustment to Output VAT against the clearing account 2320 VAT Adjustments Clearing — Boxes 2 & 7 on the last day of the period, shows it on the return, the Working Report and Annexure III, and files it with the return. Leave them alone if they do not apply — they read 0.00.
- If the period starts before your effective date of registration, MAJA starts the return at that date.
- The return is filed for the period the FTA assigned you, within 28 days after it ends. Late filing penalty: AED 1,000 for the first offence.
- For every document behind each box, open Reports → Tax → VAT Working Report.
